![]() ![]() Mitsuda wasn't just a composer, but a storyteller. I was reminded of its ethereal and subtle instrumentation, and how it reflected the sense of mystery and wonder in Crono's time-traveling adventures. A few days ago, Sabotage Studio released a sneak peek of Coral Cascades–Mitsuda's first guest track in Sea of Stars–and it immediately took me back to Trigger's Corridors of Time. You just had to be there in that experimental era, where music not only enriched the experience, but had to compensate by expressing that what couldn't be portrayed in any other way due to hardware limitations. RELATED: Chrono Cross' 45-Character Cast Was Perfect For The Story It Told The big reveal here isn't how Mitsuda's somber compositions were tugging on my heartstrings on that one cold winter night after my teenage breakup, but it's the fact that the developers, for once, did not try to replace or replicate the charm of an old monolith like Trigger, but embrace what made it genuine in the first place - Mitsuda's approach to music and composition in general. ![]() How even the most appalling titles can have great soundtracks, of which I am well aware ( Final Fantasy 13 was an experience, to say the least). ![]() I can already hear the retort saying music isn't enough of a compelling reason. Many games tried to experiment with what made Trigger successful, like Cris Tales and Cosmic Star Heroine, just to name a few examples, but they haven't achieved the same level of reverence. The JRPG I am most anticipating in 2023 is one that wants to modernize the classics (how exciting), and their target is none other than Chrono Trigger - an old lurker on fan-favorite lists and developers' homage projects. ![]()
